3 Tecumseh students admit popping pills at school

NEW CARLISLE —

Three Tecumseh High School students were taken to Dayton Children’s Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon after they were found to be under the influence of drugs at school, one of them to the point of passing out.

The one boy and two girls will be charged with delinquency by reason of inducing panic and delinquency by reason of abusing a harmful intoxicant, both of which are misdemeanors, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. The boy will be charged additionally with delinquency by reason of trafficking in a harmful intoxicant, which is a felony.

The students are not being identified by name in this story because of their ages — 14, 15 and 17. But one of the girls is from Medway and the other is from New Carlisle. The boy is from Springfield, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office received a call Tuesday from the school in reference to a female student who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, Sgt. Michael Young said via information released to the media.

A Bethel Twp. deputy met with three school administrators. The student reported that she was under the influence of pills called “Triple C’s — street name for Coricidin Cold & Cough, which is used to experience a “high” from the drug Dextromethorphan (DXM).

There were more students — the sheriff’s office did not specify how many — reported to be under the influence of the same substance and medics were summoned to the school.

Additional deputies also responded to assist at the school.

Two students reported to have taken four pills each and a third student reported to have taken eight pills, according to the sheriff’s office.

Additional concern arose when one of the female students passed out while walking to a sheriff’s cruiser.

The three students were taken to Dayton Children’s Medical Center for further evaluation because of the effects of this drug.

The investigation resulted in admissions from three students reporting that they took these pills, according to the sheriff’s office.

The purpose of taking such pills varied between students but still was an unacceptable and illegal use of the pills, the sheriff’s office said. The three students charged have been ordered into Clark County Juvenile Court.

Chemical tests have been requested with additional charges pending lab results. All three students were still receiving precautionary medical treatment late Tuesday afternoon.

“The behavior by the three students was reckless and created a great deal of concern for school officials and investigating deputies,” Sheriff Gene Kelly said.
