60% of youth with HIV don’t know they have it

By Staff

WASHINGTON D.C. —

A new government report says 60 percent of youth living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus do not know they are infected.

The new data from the Centers for Disease Control states about 50,000 people are infected each year with HIV, and one in four is age 13 to 24. “Youth make up 7 percent of the more than 1 million people in the U.S. living with HIV,” the report states.

About 12,000 youth were infected in 2010.

“The risk for HIV for most youth begins when they start having sex or start injecting drugs. HIV causes a serious infection that, without treatment, leads to AIDS and early death,” the report states. A small number of children are born with HIV, according to the report.
