Staff Report

RICHMOND, Indiana —

An affidavit filed in Wayne County Circuit Court on Friday says that a night of drinking and an argument lead to Richmond's sixth homicide of 2012.

Mark Mikesell, the suspect in the death of Patrick Perkins, contacted the Preble County Sheriff's Office through a third party Friday and asked to be picked up at Houston Woods State Park. A Richmond detective accompanied the sheriff's office to the park where Mikesell and his girlfriend Sue Holliday surrendered peacefully to officers.

Mikesell and Holliday lived with Perkins in his South 10th Street apartment. On May 26, the group was playing a game in the apartment's kitchen. When Holliday and Mikesell went to bed for the night, Perkins yelled something at Mikesell who grabbed a box cutter in the bedroom and confronted Perkins in the kitchen, the affidavit said.

Mikesell told investigators that Perkings lunged at him, but was not sure if he had a weapon, according to the affidavit. Mikesell also admitted that he swiped at Perkins with the box cutter in attempt to wound, not kill, him. Perkins grabbed his throat and ran from the apartment after Mikesell unsuccessfully tried to grab him, the affidavit said.

Holliday told investigators that she heard a scuffle, went to the kitchen and saw Mikesell standing alone in the blood-covered room. The couple left the apartment and went to Mikesell's brother's home, but the brother would not let them in the residence. Mikesell and Holliday went to South 11th Street and watched police as they investigated the scene where Perkins collapsed after leaving the apartment, the affidavit said. Investigators recovered what they believe to be the box cutter and murder weapon under the kitchen sink, the affidavit said.

People who know the trio told investigators that Perkins and Mikesell had frequently argued since Holliday and Mikesell moved into Perkins' apartment in December 2011. Mikesell suspected that Holliday and Perkins were "messing around" with each other while Mikesell was at work. Perkins kicked Mikesell out of the apartment several times but allowed Holliday to stay, but the two always patched the relationship up, the affidavit said.
