KETTERING —
A man who police said tried to steal a pack of cigarettes from a convenience store but instead made off with the bathroom key, which was attached to a kitchen spatula, has been arrested.
Jonathan M. Engle, 25, of Dayton, was arrested by Kettering police on Wednesday morning at a hotel in Moraine. Police said he entered Circle K, at 1105 W. Dorothy Lane, and tried to buy cigarettes but could not provide proper identification.
He asked the cashier for a bathroom key. When Engle came out of the bathroom, police said, he tried to steal a pack of cigarettes.
Police said the cashier struggled with the suspect, who left without the cigarettes but took the bathroom key.
Engle cooperated with police and led detectives to the 1200 block of West Dorothy Lane, where he showed them the bathroom key, which was still attached to the spatula.
Formal charges are pending.
