The driver of an empty Greene County transit bus appears to have been at fault Thursday afternoon in a collision with a loaded commercial dump truck that sent her to a hospital.

According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of the bus crossed against the traffic light at New Germany-Trebein and Beaver Valley roads and into the path of the truck at about 2 p.m., said Lt. Douglas Eck, post commander, Ohio Highway Patrol post at Xenia.

Witnesses have told OSP investigators that the truck, headed east on New Germany-Trebein Road, tried to avoid the bus, which was headed south on Beaver Valley Road, and could not.

The front of the truck, which was carrying a load of dirt, hit the front of the bus, Eck said. The impact spun the bus and left it sitting in the intersection, blocking the intersection.

The bus driver, who has not been identified by name, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. Her condition was not immediately available, Eck said.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.

“It was a scary thing but it was a reaction to try to drive the truck safely,” the truck driver, Bob Metzger, told News Center 7’s Mark Bruce. “That’s what I was trained to do and I thank God that I’m alive and was able to avoid catastrophe by hitting that pole or something.”

Crash investigators are on scene, Eck said, and commercial vehicle inspectors will check both vehicles to make sure they were working properly at the time of the accident.

At 6:30 p.m., dispatchers at the patrol post said the road has been reopened and the accident scene has been cleaned up and cleared.
