Beavercreek Schools seek $2.5M in cuts if levy fails

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio —

School officials with Beavercreek local schools have announced millions of dollars worth of new budget cuts if a levy in March does not pass.

Some residents in Beavercreek are wondering if the latest round of cuts will affect the district's string of 11 excellent ratings with the state. New cuts were announced on Tuesday by the board of education that will affect classes, classrooms and students.

Grace Ramos of Beavercreek said, "This is the hardest I've seen it in our community."

Ramos said she believes that is why the school district is having a hard time raising new funds. A levy that is on the March 3 ballot will be the district's third attempt to raise more money.

"People in Beavercreek are losing their homes. They are on assistance for food. It's tough on the taxpayer. I don't think it's a desire not to support the school," Ramos said.

The district announced $2.5 million in reductions, including 20 more teachers, aides and administrators if the levy fails in March.

Superintendent Nick Verhoff said, "At the elementary school, it's a reduction in art, music and PE. At the middle school it's a reduction in electives."

The district will also triple the pay to play fees for middle and high school sports. Administrators said the cuts are as deep as they can go.

"It's mostly personnel, and when that happens, it affects programs and services that we offer to our students," Verhoff said.

Starting Feb. 1, the district will hold a series of meeting where residents can ask questions about taxes and budget and how the district does business.
