DAYTON —

Bus drivers and mechanics employed by the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority voted down a tentative contract agreement Friday.

About 500 members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1385 began voting Friday at 7 a.m. on the contract that included pay raises and concessions. Voting concluded at about 7 p.m.

The agreement failed by six votes, according to ATU Trustee Gary Johnson.

“We figured it would be close,” Johnson said.

Mark Donaghy, executive director of the RTA, would not reveal further details of the deal Friday afternoon, but said the tentative agreement had been reached about three weeks ago. He said he was surprised to learn that the agreement vote failed Friday night.

“That’s a disappointing outcome,” he said.

Johnson declined to elaborate on what parts of the agreement the union was unhappy with beyond “pay progressions.”

Johnson said, “It’s nothing that I don’t think we can resolve. We hope to get back to the table and get it resolved.”

On Tuesday, 59 RTA clerical and support staff who are members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 101 voted in favor of a contract that moved away from step increase to pay for performance, Donaghy said.

“I think they’re both very reasonable packages,” Donaghy said. “There are (pay) increases on the table for both.”

The AFSCME contract will likely go to a vote by the RTA Board of Trustees on Tuesday, June 5.

RTA has about 600 total employees, Donaghy said. The transit authority provides about 11 million passenger trips per year on its buses.
