Candle may be cause of old school house fire

LEWISBURG —

A burning candle may be to blame for a fire that heavily damaged an apartment building and displaced 13 people.

The State Fire Marshal continues to investigate Tuesday night's blaze at 1005 North Commerce St., a former school house that was renovated into apartments.

A cause has not been made official, but it appears to have started accidentally after curtains caught fire from a candle, said Lewisburg Assistant Fire Chief Pat Fink. No electricity was running to the area where the fire appears to have started, he said.

No damage estimate was available Thursday, but the historic building may be a total loss.Fink said the fire, which took more than an hour to get under control, was limited to the first and second floors, but there was a lot of damage caused by heat and smoke throughout the building.

The American Red Cross is assisting 13 residents who were displaced by the fire. One resident was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, Fink said.

Six fire departments provided mutual aid for Lewisburg Fire and Rescue to battle the blaze at the four-story building.

The State Fire Marshal's Office could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
