Crash in Logan County leaves 1 dead

LOGAN COUNTY, Ohio —

One person died following a crash in Logan County early Monday morning, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

At 5:33 a.m. today, emergency crews responded to the intersection of Ohio 117 and County Road 96. According to authorities, a 2000 Honda Accord, driven by James M. Payer, 38, of Ridgeway, Ohio, was westbound on County Road 96 when he failed to yield from a stop sign and was struck by a 2001 International straight truck, according to a release.

Payer was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

The driver of the straight truck, identified as Shadd E. Shaffer, 34, of Belle Center, was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.

Payer was not wearing a safety belt, according to a release.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to a release.
