Dayton firefighter struck by pickup truck

DAYTON, Ohio —

A firefighter was rushed to a local hospital after he was struck by a pickup truck.

The accident happened Tuesday night on Shroyer Road at Littell Avenue.

Officers said the firefighter was doing his job when the driver of the pickup truck slammed into him.

Traffic was shut down for hours near the Circle K store where the incident happened

Firefighters worked in the cold and snow-rain mix to figure out what caused the driver to hit the firefighter while he was helping a member of his crew back up a fire truck. Authorities said the lights were on and flashing and the victim had on his reflective gear.

District Chief Tim Rose said, “All he was doing was standing behind the engine trying to make sure we didn’t hit anybody.

News Center 7 was told that Medic 15 and Engine 15 were called to the intersection on a report of a man who had fallen in the street. As the firefighters were working to clear the scene, that is when the driver of the pickup truck struck the firefighter, police said.

The firefighter was taken to Miami Valley Hospital.

“Yes, he was conscious. He has spoken to us. They did a CAT scan, took x-rays and all the precautions,” Rose said.

The incident remains under investigation.
