DAYTON —
Police apprehended a man they say confessed to pointing a knife at a grocery store clerk’s head and stealing $400 in cash from his register on Tuesday night at El Merchadito, 1908 E. Third St.
Lt. Wendy Stiver said Donald Mustin also confessed to another robbery when questioned Wednesday afternoon.
Stiver said a Central Business District patrol officer identified Mustin and arrested him on a warrant for a breaking and entering charge. When police interviewed him, Stiver said, he confessed to robbing the El Merchadito grocery and committing another armed robbery.
Mustin, 20, is in the Montgomery County Jail pending felony aggravated robbery charges.
According to a Dayton police report, security video from the store clearly shows a man walk into the store and head to the back of the grocery. He then left the store.
He re-entered shortly afterward and went to the rear of the store for a second time. He approached the clerk with a bottle of orange soda and pulled a “large knife,” according to the report. He then walked behind the counter, where he demanded the clerk open the register drawer.
The robber reportedly pinned the clerk to the counter, hiding his face from the camera behind the register while he emptied the drawer. The clerk said the suspect pointed the knife at his head while he made his demands.
The man fled east on East Third.
A K-9 unit responded to the scene but was unsuccessful in picking up the robber’s scent.
Details about the other robbery Mustin confessed to were not immediately available. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on the robbery and breaking and entering charges on Thursday afternoon.
