Dayton to launch mobile speed van Thursday

Staff Report

DAYTON —

The Dayton Police Department will expand its photo speed enforcement efforts beginning Thursday when it deploys a mobile speed van.

The van is a clearly marked vehicle that will be deployed at several locations on a rotating basis, allowing it to manage changing traffic demographics and the needs of the community. Each deployment location will be clearly marked with signage to indicate its presence, according to the department, which announced this program through a press release on Wednesday afternoon.

Speeding is a factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes in the U.S.  More than 13,000 people die annually from speed-related accidents, according to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety.  Speed increases the risk of crashes and the severity of a crash by increasing the energy of the impact. Photographic enforcement was implemented in Dayton to deter aggressive and dangerous driving behaviors.

The van will capture a vehicle traveling at speeds in excess of the posted speed limit. A citation will then be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. The registered owner will have an opportunity to go to www.photonotice.com http://www.photonotice.com to review the infraction.

If they are not the driver of the vehicle at the time of the violation, they will be able to nominate or provide the name of the actual driver of the vehicle. Additionally, those issued a citation will have an opportunity to contest their citation and offer any mitigating evidence to the offense to a hearing officer at a hearing. The fine amount of a mobile speed citation is $85.
