Detectives investigate overnight homicides

MONTGOMERY CO., Ohio —

Investigators are piecing together information in connection with two area homicides - one in Riverside and the other in Dayton - in which both victims were in their 20s.

The first incident occurred around 11:15 p.m. Friday in Riverside. It marked the city’s first homicide of the year. The second, which was recorded shortly after midnight Saturday, occurredon the 3500 block of Guthrie Road in Dayton.

Authorities confirmed Saturday afternoon the victim in Riverside was 20-year-old Geoffrey Andrews. Police Chief Mark Reiss said Andrews was shot multiple times while he was at an apartment at 4217 Amston Drive.

Andrews was with two friends when an unknown man knocked on the door, Reiss said. When the door was answered, the man stepped forward and started firing at Andrews, he said.

“He and two other individuals took off to a car waiting in the area,” Reiss said.

The two witnesses were interviewed by police. As of Saturday night, no information about the suspect had been released.

Shawn Marvin, a neighbor, said he moved into the area about a month ago and met Andrews for the first time on Friday.

“I was watching TV and looked out my window and saw, like, 18 cop cars,” he said. “I came out here just like any other neighbor.”

Reiss said the homicide comes at a time when violence is subsiding in Riverside.

“Overall, violent crime has been down,” he said.

“We’ve had a number of drive-by shootings in the past several years that have resulted in injuries, but no deaths,” Reiss added.

In Dayton, 29-year-old Jason Miller was found dead on the 3500 block of Guthrie Road. His body, on the center line of Guthrie, was discovered by a passerby, police said.

Police said he had been shot several times, with two gunshots to the head.

Officers said Miller was shot and then ran a short distance before he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drugs were reportedly found, but Dayton Police Sgt. Dan Mauch said no other details were being released.

As of Saturday night, police were not reporting on any suspects in connection with the homicide, Mauch said.
