Diesel fuel on SB I-75 causes traffic issues

Staff Report

DAYTON —

Traffic problems arose on southbound Interstate 75 between Main Street and Edwin C. Moses Boulevard where a semi-tractor trailer spilled gallons of diesel fuel around noon Wednesday.

One of the truck's gas tanks was punctured when it hit a median around I-75 southbound and Main Street, causing it to spill fuel until it got off the highway at Edwin C. Moses Boulevard and pulled into a McDonald's, according to police.

Vehicles were fishtailing across all three lanes after the initial spill, according to police scanners, and the right lane of the highway was blocked.

Crews put down sand to absorb the diesel fuel and make the road less slick before Hazmat crews responded. Sgt. Joseph Wiesman said the spill was only a clean-up issue, and no hazardous materials were involved. Though the tankers hold betweeb 75 and 80 gallons of fuel, a specific amount that spilled wasn't noted.

"It was quite a bit," Wiesman said.

Some lanes remained closed as crews cleaned up the absorbant materials used to soak up the fuel.
