Dive team searching for gun in shooting

WAPAKONETA —

A 22-year-old Wapakoneta man was arrested Monday and jailed on charges accusing him of firing at a moving pick-up truck early Sunday and a dive team spent several hours searching the Auglaize River trying to find the handgun they believe was used.

Zachary Gonterman, 102 N. Blackhoof St., has been booked into jail on charges of felonious assault and tampering with evidence, Wapakoneta Police Chief Russel Hunlock said via information released to News Center 7 on Monday afternoon.

At about 2:47 a.m., police were dispatched to a report of shots fired in the area of Silver and Defiance streets, Hunlock said. Officers arrived to find that several rounds had been fired and they learned that the shots had been fired at the moving vehicle.

Police located the truck and learned of a potential suspect. No reason has been given for why the truck was fired upon.

No one was wounded in the shooting, according to police.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, the Allen County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and the Wapakoneta Fire Department is assisting in the investigation.

The river search, which began at about 3:15 p.m. Monday, continued until nightfall, according to a police department dispatcher. There was no immediate word on whether a weapon was found or whether the search would resume on Tuesday.
