DAYTON —

A driver who apparently panicked after hitting a pedestrian Wednesday evening was found at her house not long after the incident and given citations that ordered her into court on several infractions.

The driver, who was not identified by name, was turning left onto Woodbine Avenue from South Smithville Road at about 7:30 p.m. when the pedestrian was struck in her right arm by the vehicle, Dayton Sgt. Eric Sheldon told News Center 7.

The driver apparently didn’t see the pedestrian, who was in the crosswalk headed south on Smithville, Sheldon said.

The injuries were minor, but the woman driver apparently had no driver’s license and begged the victim not to call police, Sheldon said.

The driver also had her two children with her, and by this time they had gotten out of the vehicle, presumably to see what was going on.

She put the children back in the vehicle and sped off, Sheldon said. The children were not secured in car seats. They were not injured, he said.

Police tracked the woman to her house and brought her back to the scene. Police gave her citations for hit and run, failure to yield to a pedestrian, operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license and quite a few driver’s license suspensions, the sergeant said.

“She said she kind of panicked, she knew she didn’t have a driver’s license and obviously shouldn’t have been driving, and just didn’t know how to act,” Sheldon said.

The victim, who refused treatment, told News Center 7 videographer Jim Noelker that the driver took the corner too fast.
