EPA decision on land may help redevelopment

By By the Associated Press

DAYTON, Ohio —

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is considering whether to give some Dayton-area property a legal designation that could speed redevelopment by easing requirements for groundwater cleanup.

The agency says land near a former Delphi plant could get the status of an "urban designation setting." That means the groundwater wouldn't be used as drinking water and wouldn't have to meet stricter cleanup standards. Buildings in the area would get their water from a municipal source.

The Dayton Daily News reports officials have high hopes for redevelopment in the area. Federal officials want to add a former Wright Brothers airplane production site to the Aviation Heritage National Park. City leaders want to make property available for manufacturing and industrial work.

The EPA is accepting public comment before deciding on the designation.
