A Greenville man will spend 16 years in prison for stabbing his ex-girlfriend in April.

Jamel Gray, 37, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and attempted aggravated murder in Darke County Common Pleas Court. He was immediately sentenced.

Gray was the subject of a man hunt April 19 that forced two schools in Greenville to go on a two-hour delay as authorities searched the area.

He reportedly forced his way into a home in the 200 block of Gray Avenue in Greenville around 2 a.m. that day and stabbed his former girlfriend Shanna Cates numerous times. Cates, 38, had been staying with friends rather than her own home due to safety concerns relating to Gray, police said at the time.

He had been arrested for domestic violence on April 17 after an incident at Cates’ home. She was granted a 12-month civil protection order against him.

Police said that Gray appeared in court on Wednesday, April 18 and was released, at which time he immediately started looking for Cates. He found her around 1:45 a.m. April 19 when the assault occurred.

In May, with Gray still on the loose, a reward of $500 was offered for information on his whereabouts, and it was later doubled to $1,000. He was arrested in Cleveland on June 8 after a struggle with police there.
