DAYTON, Ohio —

Authorities are continuing to investigate a crash that left one person dead Sunday afternoon on U.S. 35, and prompted the closure of the highway.

Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Shawn Steven Graham, 33, of 4662 Airway Road in Riverside. He was pronounced dead at 12 p.m. at the scene, which was on eastbound U.S. 35, west of James H. McGee Blvd.

Graham’s death was ruled an accident and he died of multiple blunt force trauma.

Graham was driving a Chrysler Sebring in the eastbound lanes when he lost control of his car and swerved into the median. That car became airborne and landed on top of a westbound pickup truck, police said.  The crash and investigation shut down the highway for most of Sunday afternoon.

The two adults and a 7-year-old child in the truck were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sgt. Bill Keller said witnesses described hearing skidding tires before the Sebring suddenly turned left across the eastbound lanes and hit the median. Keller said speed was likely a factor, but there was no indication of alcohol or drug use by that driver.

An SUV traveling westbound next to the pickup truck was hit by debris, but its driver was not hurt, police said.

Keller said the SUV driver was alerting the driver of the pickup to a problem with his trailer when he looked up and saw the Sebring airborne. “He hit the gas, which took him out any direct accident,” Keller said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol assisted with traffic control.
