Female inmate sneaks heroin into jail, body cavity

MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio —

A Kentucky woman arrested Tuesday along Interstate 75 near Troy on an outstanding arrest warrant for receiving stolen property got in much more serious trouble while an inmate.

Correction officers, deputies and detectives found about 4 ounces of powered heroin on the bed issued to Amy Wells, 25, Mount Sterling, KY. in the female cell block on Wednesday.

Chief Deputy David Duchak said that Wells slipped the heroin into the jail undetected while hidden in a body cavity.

Wells now faces additional charges of  illegal conveyance of a drug into a detention facility, possession of drugs and tampering with evidence. She could face over ten years in the Ohio State Reformatory for Women in Marysville in convicted as currently charged. Her bond was set at $200,000 in cash.

Detectives estimate the street value of the heroin at about $5,000.

Wells was transporting the drug from Detriot, Michigan to Kentucky according to detectives, who noted she was cooperating with authorities.

She was the passenger in a car when the driver was pulled over on southbound I-75 near Troy in Miami County late Tuesday morning. Officers discovered that Wells had an active warrant for her arrest.
