Authorities in Trotwood said motorists who speed and run red lights in the city are now helping to pay for new police equipment.

The Trotwood Police Department said fines and fees have officers riding in style with bright white and shiny Dodge Chargers.

Officials said fines from red light and speed cameras made the new cruisers possible.

Karl Sneed, of Trotwood, has mixed feelings about the new cruisers.

“It’s good it did not come from taxpayer dollars, but it came from somewhere, probably from people who can’t afford to pay those tickets.”

Trotwood police said they were able to purchase the new cruisers without using money from taxpayers.

Capt. John Porter said, “This all comes out of seizures, fines and citation fines. In a sense, we’re taking what the bad boys are doing and putting it back into use for the community.”

Porter said the new cruisers were sorely needed because the old ones were starting to show their age.

“These cars get driven 24 hours a day, seven days a week and not been able to do capital improvement the last couple of years because of budgets,” Porter said.

The four new cruisers have yet to be outfitted and wrapped with the police logo. The old cruisers that are being replaced will continue to be used, just not on the patrol beat.

“We still recycle them, use them for parts with some of the older vehicles, Porter said.”

The new cruisers will be wrapped and ready to go by the end of February.
