Ohio EPA to check spill in Covington

Staff Report

COVINGTON, Miami County —

An official with the Ohio EPA will be in the village on Tuesday morning to help deal with a spill that firefighters here reported on Monday night.

Dale Farmer, emergency response coordinator, Ohio EPA Southwest District Office, told News Center 7 that the Covington Fire Department has made arrangements to contain the fuel oil spill, which could be diesel or home heating oil.

A Covington firefighter told News Center 7 earlier Monday evening that the spill was reaching a catch basin from an industrial plat near Mote Drive. Fire crews were trying to locate the source of the spill, and called in the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Mote Drive is between Ohio 41 (Troy Avenue) to the east, and Ohio 48 (South High Street) to the west.

Farmer, whose office is in Dayton, said he will go out to the Miami County village on Tuesday morning to check out the spill to determine what it is and where it’s coming from.

He said the spill could be coming from a home, but it’s “really difficult to trace at night. Sounds like it may be a slow leak.”
