DAYTON —
A man out for a drive the night of the Fourth of July told police his car caught fire -- with him in it -- when some type of fireworks got into his vehicle.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight Thursday in the 1800 block of Weaver Avenue, according to a Dayton police incident report.
A 40-year-old man who lives on Heck Avenue told police he was driving his gold 2000 Pontiac Bonneville west on Weaver when a fireworks projectile entered his car through the driver's side window, struck the passenger side window and landed in the back seat, according to the report.
Police said a short time later, the driver noticed flames shooting from the back seat area. The incident report indicates that by the time police arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
Firefighters put out the flames and the Bonneville was towed.
Police said it is unclear whether the fireworks projectile was fired at the vehicle intentionally.
