WEST ALEXANDRIA —
The funeral of a West Alexandria man killed on a mission in Afghanistan is tentatively set for Monday, March 18.
Spc. Cody Dalton Suggs, 22, was a member of the Ohio National Guard who was killed March 7 in a non-combat incident that is under investigation.
His funeral will be at Salem Lutheran Church, 70 E. Dayton St. in West Alexandria. A visitation is scheduled for Sunday evening.
Both the visitation and funeral will take place at those times if Suggs body is returned to the area by Saturday. Those who attend should call the funeral home to confirm the times.
Suggs of West Alexandria joined the Guard in 2009 and worked as a truck driver with the company, which is part of the 371st Sustainment Brigade, based in Springfield, said James A. Sims, Ohio National Guard spokesman.
The 371st Sustainment Brigade, based at the Springfield Armed Forces Reserve Center at the Springfield Air National Guard Base, commands 1,732 personnel in two battalions: The 112th Transportation Battalion, which is made up of several transportation companies and detachments, and the 371st Special Troops Battalion.
Suggs also worked as a night manager at Marsh Supermarket in Eaton with others who were deployed to Afgahanistan. His deployment last year was his first since joining the Guard.
He died at the Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan while on mission with the 1487th Transportation Company, based in Piqua, according to the Department of Defense.
Suggs is the 15th Ohio National Guardsman who has died in the fight against terrorism since 2001, according to the Ohio National Guard.
Suggs is survived by his parents, Brian and Wendy Suggs, and his younger sister, Taylor.
