Gas leak prompts evacuations

DAYTON, Ohio —

Emergency responders evacuated an entire city block after a gas leak Saturday morning.

The Dayton Fire Department said workers filling part of a vacant lot with dirt ruptured the gas line at about 11 a.m.  Firefighters went door-to-door, evacuating dozens of people in the area of Auburn and Salem Avenues affected by the leak.

"It's very dangerous... with the weather system that we've got going on here, this gas tends to be, like, kind of laying close to the ground," Captain Cheryl Clark of the Dayton Fire Department said.  "So there's a possibility of ignition source."

The fire department provided a bus with coffee and water to shelter the displaced residents while Vectren made repairs to the stop the leak.

The residents were allowed to return to their homes about 2 to 3 hours after the leak was first reported.
