A 56-year-old Dayton grandfather is in the Montgomery County Jail after he allegedly beat his grandson and another child with a belt.
David Jackson of Dayton is facing two counts each of domestic violence, child endangering and assault. All are misdemeanors.
Jackson’s wife has custody of the boy, 11. They all live at the same residence, 2612 Saint Charles Ave.
According to a Dayton police report, Jackson arrived home intoxicated Monday evening and was told by the boy’s aunt that the child had been disrespectful to her while she was baby-sitting.
She told police that Jackson went into a bedroom and retrieved a belt that had a silver buckle. He allegedly beat the boy. hitting him several times hitting him on the back, legs, arms and face.
A police officer noted in the report that large welts were visible on the child’s legs, back and arms. “There were too many different welts to count,” he said in the report.
At one point, Jackson allegedly hit the boy’s 2-year-old cousin as well and attempted to hit several other children in the home. The girl had a visible red welt on her shoulder, according to the police report.
Jackson told an officer that he’d had five or six mixed drinks between 3 p.m. and the time of the incident, about 6:30 p.m.
Jackson was taken into custody and while en route to jail allegedly told an officer “I have hit him with a belt several times in the past and I am going to hit him with a belt again when I get out.”
The boy is still in the custody of his grandmother. Jackson’s bail has been set at $20,000.
