Staff Report
DAYTON —
Police were looking for the gunmen who sprayed bullets at house on Auburn Avenue late Wednesday afternoon and left a neighborhood upset and on edge.
"It could have been my son. Three years old. Dead. How would I have explained that to his daddy, to my mother?" said Keshia, a neighborhood resident who asked that her last name not be used. She said there were children standing in the path of at least a dozen bullets and that one slug grazed her ankle as she tried to protect the children.
She and other women in the neighborhood told News Center 7 reporter Kate Bartley that they watched a man step out from behind a tree and fire at least six rounds into a home in the 1900 block of Auburn Avenue.
Dayton Sgt. Mark Spiers told News Center 7, “we have a report that as many as four people were shooting” but that police aren’t sure what started it all. Police were dispatched to the area at about 5:30 p.m.
However, police say one of the shooters was likely standing on the front porch, firing back at the people shooting at the house.
Spiers said, “The information we got is that they fled in a vehicle, so we are looking for a van that was involved in this, but at this point, that's about all we have."
Keshia said, “Just a whole bunch of pow pow pow pow. Close.”
One of the slugs hit a window, one hit above the doorbell, another drilled its way into wood next to some steps and still another shattered the top and bottom of the glass front door.
"In the midst of the shooting, I can't go dodge,” Keshia said. “I have to get my son. I have to get all of the kids. Make sure they're OK first. I'm 24. I lived my life. They haven't lived their life yet. I have to protect them. Period."
Keshia says she’s angry and wants the gunmen caught. "You all didn't give a damn about my child. I don't give a damn about ya'll," she said.
