COLUMBUS, Ohio —
An Ohio bill would let concealed handgun permit holders bypass competency courses to renew their licenses.
The measure cleared the House on a 59-28 vote on Wednesday, sending it to the Senate for consideration. The legislation was among a flurry of bills that state lawmakers passed this week ahead of their summer break.
The bill would eliminate the demonstrated competency requirement for a license renewal, and instead only require that applicants provide proof of training to renew. Currently, applicants already must undergo an initial round of training to obtain a permit.
The measure also makes changes to how the state recognizes concealed carry license holders from across state lines. It would authorize the attorney general to determine if another state automatically recognizes Ohio concealed carry licenses without written reciprocity agreements.
