Heck wants teen in cop assault tried as adult

Staff Report

DAYTON —

Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. will ask a judge to have a 16-year-old tried as an adult on charges accusing her of assaulting a Dayton police officer with a knife.

Rebekah Attaway should be held responsible on charges of felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest, Heck said Friday, because “this juvenile is clearly violent and dangerous. Her underage alcohol abuse, fighting and assaulting paramedics, and now stabbing a police officer, shows that her cases should be transferred to the adult court.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, police on the evening of Aug. 21 were dispatched to Cambridge Avenue on a report of breaking and entering in progress.

Once they arrived, Officer Kari Staples spotted the defendant running. She ordered the suspect to stop and when she continued to run, Staples gave chase. The defendant was caught and struggled with the officer during the arrest, and eventually pulled a knife she had hidden in the waistband of her pants, Heck’s office said. The defendant stabbed the officer in her arm, causing a deep wound.

Staples was treated and released from Miami Valley Hospital. Attaway was taken to the county juvenile detention center.

At the time of the incident, the defendant had a pending felony assault charge from an unrelated incident that occurred May 4, according to the prosecutor’s office.

In that incident, the defendant was found by officers to be extremely intoxicated and combative. As medics were attempting to treat her, she tried to bite one of the medics. As she was being placed on a cot for transport to the hospital, she spit and kicked at officers and paramedics, resulting in a charge of felonious assault, Heck’s office said.
