HUBER HEIGHTS, Ohio —
An eighth-grader was taken into custody Tuesday accused of carrying an unloaded .22-caliber handgun into Studebaker Middle School.
Superintendent Bill Kirby said students reported the eighth-grader to the assistant principal.
The eighth-grader, whose name and age have not been released, was called to the office and when asked, turned over the gun.
School officials said the student didn’t have any intention of threatening anyone.
“My understanding from the principal is that he brought it to kind of show off,” Kirby said.
The student has been suspended and there will be a recommendation made to expel him from school for one year, Kirby said. The eighth-grader was taken into custody by the school resource officer.
“This is the kind of thing that we will not tolerate,” Kirby said. “In this day and age I think everybody knows that’s not a wise decision.”
Kirby said a message was sent to all Studebaker parents alerting them to the incident and assuring them that at no time were any students or staff in any danger.
“We’re happy the students came forward,” he said.
This is the second time in less than a week that a student has taken a gun into a school. A 15-year-old student had a loaded .22-caliber pistol in his backpack at Troy High School on Jan. 20, Superintendent Eric Herman confirmed Monday to WHIO-TV.
The gun was found at the end of the school day after police, who had been called to the school, performed a search. The gun, which investigators said belongs to the student's father, was found inside an orange hat inside the backpack.
The student claimed he was not going to hurt anyone, but was going shooting after school. Troy police have said charges against the student have been filed.
