MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio —
One person driving a pickup truck was trapped for a time in a two-vehicle wreck Monday afternoon on southbound Ohio 48 at Fenner Road that left one dog with serious injuries and sent a second scurrying for safety.
The driver of the truck, who said his name was Scott Goubeaux, was trapped at least 15 minutes. He drove into the driver's side of a Jeep driven by Mike Mowery, 62, of Troy, which was sent over a guardrail and into a ravine, Miami County sheriff's Deputy Lee McCartney said. The truck, headed west on Fenner, apparently didn't see the southbound Jeep and started into the intersection, McCartney said.
The accident remains under investigation.
Goubeaux, moments after rounding up Rufus, said he was holding his terrier and didn't see the oncoming Jeep. "I didn't see him. I watched the truck come down the road and it was over. Someone opened the door to my truck and he took off running," Goubeaux said of Rufus.
Both drivers suffered injuries that were not believed to be life threatening, but Mowery was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight. A Doberman pinscher in the Jeep with Mowery suffered serious injuries. There was no immediate details on severity of the injuries to Mowery or his dog.
An eyewitness, Stephanie Schindler of Ludlow Falls, said she works in an emergency room and was on her way from Pleasant Hill when she stopped and got out to help the person in the Jeep.
"I just went down and was talking to him, getting his name, trying to keep his head still, where he's hurting," Schindler said. "There were a few other people also assisting him. I am an animal lover and helped the dog."
