SPRINGFIELD —

A suspect was arrested for possession of drugs and theft early Friday morning after stealing from a local gas station.

A caller to 9-1-1 told authorities an employee of the Speedway at 1314 E. Main St. in Springfield allegedly fought with the male suspect accused of stealing an item from the store.

When police arrived, the employee confirmed the theft and that the male had a knife. The employee told police the male was wearing a yellow shirt, black shorts and walking with a white female.

The suspect was located on Warder Street and identified himself to police as Stephen L. Morgan. Morgan and the female were taken back to Speedway and identified by the employee.

The clerk said Morgan put two bags of beef jerky on the counter, but left the store with two sodas and a box of aspirin.

During a search while he was under arrest, police found a plastic bag containing 9.5 pale blue pills in his pocket. The pills were identified as Diazepam, a Schedule IV drug, according to the police report.

Morgan was arrested and charged with theft, obstructing officials business and possession of drugs.
