KETTERING —

Police arrested a man who ran away from a traffic stop early Tuesday evening and left a small child behind in his vehicle.

A Kettering Police officer attempted to pull over a dark-colored sedan driven by Jeffrey E. Williams, 27, on Croftshire Road at 4:45 p.m. The traffic stop was for speeding, according to police.

Instead of stopping, Williams allegedly turned onto E. David Road and sped off. As he attempted to turn the car onto Hastings Drive, Williams struck a curb and bailed, according to Kettering police Sgt. Lee Sanders.

Officers pursued Williams on foot and arrested him at King’s Point Pub, 4660 Wilmington Pike.

Upon checking the car, officers found a 5-year-old boy strapped in to a car seat in the back seat, Sanders said.

The child, who was later handed over to his grandfather, was “pretty calm” through the ordeal, Sanders said.

Williams is being held in the Montgomery County Jail Wednesday. He faces possible charges of fleeing and eluding and child endangering from Tuesday’s incident. He was also found to have four outstanding warrants in Montgomery County. Those charges include breaking and entering, plus several traffic and probation violations.
