Man pleads guilty to assaulting deputy

GREENE CO., Ohio —

A man who attacked a Greene County Sheriff's deputy who stopped to help him has pleaded guilty to the assault.

Deputy Josh Barrett spotted a vehicle pulled over on the side of Wilberforce-Clifton Road in October 2011 and stopped to check on the occupant who appeared to be passed out. The man inside the vehicle, Joshua Schell, woke up when Barrett approached the car and started beating the deputy with his fists.

Barrett said he was able to use his Taser to subdue Schell.

Jeff Hunter with the Greene County Prosecutor's Office said, "Besides being caught off guard, he was physical. He was an excellent wrestler in high school. He showed a lot of physical strength. Three years in prison shows this kind of conduct will not be tolerated."

Schell pleaded guilty to attempted felonious assault and will serve 3 years in prison. Barrett has returned to normal duties within the sheriff's office.
