Staff Report
MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio —
Authorities said a 69-year-old Covington man died Tuesday afternoon after he became pinned under a forklift while working on a pipe project in Elizabeth Twp.
The victim was identified as John Gearhardt, according to the Miami County Sheriff's Office.
According to New Carlisle fire officials, the man was working with others to remove piping from a well at 3180 Dayton Brandt Road when he became pinned upside down in the well. No one else was injured.
Officials have not said what caused Gearhardt to become trapped. Rescue crews worked for 90 minutes before they were able to extricate him.
Fire Chief Tracy Young said fire and rescue crews were dispatched to the scene just before 2 p.m.
"He could have been hit with the blades," Young said, noting that hanging upside down for a long period of time can cause asphyxiation.
