Monroe school district in fiscal emergency

By By the Associated Press

MONROE, Ohio —

A southwest Ohio school district has been put on fiscal emergency, and the state will supervise efforts to resolve its budget shortfall.

State Auditor Dave Yost took the action Wednesday for Monroe Local Schools. The school district faces an operating deficit of $2.2 million. A committee will be created to develop a financial plan for the district, which is in a fast-growing suburban area about midway between Cincinnati and Dayton along Interstate 75.

A half-dozen of Ohio's 613 school districts are in fiscal emergency. Another southwest Ohio district, Little Miami Schools, hopes to emerge from fiscal emergency after voters passed a levy last year.

Monroe schools will put an emergency levy before voters Aug. 7.
