DAYTON —

A call from neighbors about drug sales led to the arrest of a Dayton man who police allege tried to hide drugs and cash when officers arrived to investigate.

Demetrus Dunson, 33, is being held in the Montgomery County Jail pending formal charges of breaking and entering, tampering with evidence, possession of criminal tools, and possession of drugs, all felony offenses.

The breaking and entering charge was suggested because the owner of the vacant home told police that she did not give Dunson permission to be in the house, according to a Dayton Police report.

Officers went to check on the house at 2016 Picadilly Avenue Tuesday evening after receiving a tip that several individuals were selling drugs out of the vacant house.

When police arrived, they could see through the open front door that there was indeed someone inside the house. That person, later identified as Dunson, closed the front door upon seeing officers outside, according to the report.

Officers called for backup and surrounded the house. According to the police report, they could hear lots of noises coming from inside the house, as if someone was moving furniture around.

Police made several commands for the people inside to come out, and when no one did, they made entry into the house.

Dunson was found to be the only person inside. Officers who searched the home reported that it appeared as if someone had just accessed the attic and thrown a bag of crack cocaine up there. The bag was the only thing in the attic not covered in dust.

There was also an overturned trash can with some crack cocaine, baggies and a scale inside, according to the report.

Police also found a hole in the wall with $1,531 in cash inside.

Dunson claimed that he was helping the owner fix up the house and that he was just waiting on a plumber. He said he slammed the door when police arrived because he had been smoking marijuana.

The total weight of the drugs found was 201 grams of crack cocaine, broken down into smaller baggies holding 25 grams each.

Dunson has several prior felony convictions for theft, receiving stolen property, and possession of cocaine.
