Passer-by credited with saving crash victim

PREBLE COUNTY —

A passer-by is being credited with saving the life of an 83-year-old Indiana man from a burning van that had crashed on Kimmel Road Friday afternoon.

According to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office, the 83-year-old man was traveling east on Kimmel, a half-mile from State Route 726, when he suffered an apparent medical emergency and crashed his Dodge Caravan into a bridge railing.

The van caught fire in the aftermath of the wreck and the passing motorist stopped and pulled the 83-year-old man from the wreckage, deputies said.

According to deputies, firefighters said the van was fully engulfed in flames as they arrived on scene.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The sheriff’s office would not release the name of the passer-by.
