DAYTON —
Police now say a fatal shooting on Xenia Avenue early Friday morning was not related to drugs.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Keith Van Moore of Dayton, was shot at least twice. Police initially said they believed the crime was drug related, but later said a disagreement may have turned violent.
Dayton Police Sgt. Moises Perez said officers found Moore lying in the street near the intersection of Xenia and George Street. Medics transported him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
“Someone had heard approximately two shots right about 5 o’clock in the morning,” said Dayton Police Sgt. Moises Perez. “They had maybe heard some yelling and they believed it was behind 353 Xenia Ave.”
Witnesses told News Center 7 Moore was with friends inside a home playing video games into the early morning hours, and the shooting occurred just after he left the home before 5 a.m.
Several friends said they don’t know who would want to hurt Moore.
“He was just like a big teddy bear,” said Felicia Howard. “He was not the violent type at all.”
She said the shooting may have stemmed from a “little confrontation” he had with another individual.
Friends and family plan to hold a memorial for Moore at the intersection of Xenia and George at 5 p.m. Sunday.
