Pilot program offers small businesses chance at empty space

DAYTON, Ohio —

Three new stores may be opening in downtown Dayton for the holiday season.

A volunteer pilot program designed to bring new businesses to fill vacant stores is taking a big step.

Three retailers have been chosen by Activated Spaces for their pilot popup project. Two businesses will fill empty spaces in the Oregon District, while another will fill an empty space in the Terra Cotta District.

Lisa Scott, who owns Beaute Box, said, "It's a wonderful opportunity as a new business."

She is hoping her mobile spa business will an empty space in the Terra Cotta District.

"Being a new business, sometimes property owners are a little weary about leaving the space to you because they're taking a chance," Scott said.

Scott begins negotiations on Tuesday morning with the property owner.

The pilot popup program matches willing building owners with chosen small businesses to test the waters with short term leases.

"This is a great opportunity to pop up as you can say, during the holiday season and provide awesome services to people," Scott said.

She said she is hoping to get a 90-day lease on the vacant spot.

"The women who are downtown, can come in during lunch, can come in before work, after work and get service instead of having to wait and take care of it maybe on the weekend," Scott said.

The retailers are hoping to open up before the holiday season heats up.
