Safe resolution after man threatens to jump

Staff Report

DAYTON, Ohio —

A 25-year-old homeless man who at first threatened to jump off a building on the southeast corner of Main and Sixth Streets at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday was taken into custody safely, police said.

The man, who is from the Dayton area, at one point sat on top of a two-foot ledge that hangs off the roof of the vacant six-story building at 226 S. Main, Maj. Brian Johns told News Center 7’s John Bedell.

SWAT team members entered the building just before 9 p.m. and police took him into custody at about 20 minutes later. Parts of Fifth, Main, Ludlow and Jefferson streets were closed while police worked to bring the man down safely.

At first, the man was very agitated and told police to back off. He calmed down and allowed several police officers on the roof with him. Then, he backed off the ledge and asked for a cigarette.

The officers tossed him a smoke and after taking a few draws from it, he calmly laid down and officers took him into custody and walked him down the stairs to the street.

“He was upset over a custody issue with his girlfriend. But something like that’s not worth dying over so he did the right thing by coming down,” Johns said.

The man was taken to a hospital and Johns said police will not pursue criminal charges. The man has a lot to deal with, Johns said, and the department is working to get the man medical help for the issues he’s been having so he can move on from this.
