Police: House fire used to cover up burglary

DAYTON, Ohio —

Authorities said a fire in Dayton has been ruled arson, and whoever set the fire is trying to cover up another crime.

The fire happened at a house on Autubon Place in Dayton.

Police said someone ransacked the house, stealing jewelry, a television and the setting the house on fire. Investigators said they managed to gather some evidence.

Denise Chattams, who lives in the house said, "It hurts. It hurts."

It has been a painful day for the Dayton mother. She said, "I'm just thankful that we weren't home and nothing happened to myself or my daughter."

Chattams said she was at work when she was called from her neighbors, saying that her house was on fire.

Battalion Chief Joe Meyer said, "They stole her TV and a number of other items. Appeared to ransacked her jewelry box. It's kind of sad really."

Authorities said they believe the person responsible entered through a back door of the house. They said the thieves took what they wanted and then set fire to an upstairs bedroom on the way out.

"For someone to victimize me, I have no idea why," Chattams said.

The homeowner works in community services. "There's absolutely nothing I can do but extend a hand to someone who is in need," Chattams said.

If you  have information about this case, call 333-COPS and ask for either the fire department's arson division or the police department's burglary squad.
