Police: Neighbor attacked over basketball hoop

Staff Report

DAYTON —

A mother and son were arrested Monday night after an altercation over a basketball hoop sent their neighbor to the hospital.

According to a Dayton Police incident report, a family on West Bruce Avenue reported that a family a few blocks south on Kurtz Avenue had taken their children’s basketball hoop that was normally used in the street by neighborhood kids.

A police officer located the hoop in a backyard on Kurtz and returned it to the owners.

Minutes later, a woman called police from Kurtz and claimed that someone had stolen her child’s basketball hoop. Before police could get to her house and explain, they were called to a fight on Bruce.

The basketball hoop owner was found in the street with a severe laceration above his eye.

He told police that Treva Leroy and her son had come to take the hoop back and when he tried to stop them, he was struck numerous times by the son.

The victim’s blood was found on the son’s hands, and on the hood and interior of Leroy’s vehicle, according to the report.

Mother and son were arrested and face possible charges of robbery and assault.

Leroy, 46, has a criminal history that includes felony convictions for theft and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Her son’s age was not listed on the police report. It is unknown if he is a juvenile or adult.
