SPRINGFIELD —
An admitted “pyromaniac” was arrested Thursday after a witness said he tried to set fire to a bench on City Hall Plaza.
According to a Springfield police report, a witness was working on the corner of Main and Limestone streets and told officers he saw the suspect and then smelled something burning. When the man rounded the corner of the building, he saw small flames coming from a bench located on the plaza just south of the building, at 1 S. Limestone St.
The man put the fire out with a cup of tea, according to the report.
Police located the 18-year-old suspect on Limestone just south of High Street. According to the report, the teenager said he is a “pyromaniac” and “wanted to see flames.” He then lit a piece of paper on fire and used that to set the bench on fire.
He was arrested for criminal mischief and ordered into court. He was not listed as an inmate Friday in the Clark County Jail.
