Staff Report

DAYTON, Ohio —

The Dayton Police drug unit confiscated a stolen gun and made one arrest during a search of Club Expressions, formerly Bertie’s II Bar, on East Third Street Thursday evening. “We received a Crime Stoppers report that drugs were being sold out of this building,” Sgt. John Sullivan said.

He said the building at 2404 E. Third St. consists of a private club on the first floor with apartments above, which are all interconnected to each other.

“Supposedly people connected with this building were supplying other dealers,” Sullivan said. Police have been conducting an ongoing investigation into the operation and obtained a search warrant after presenting evidence that drug sales were taking place there.

Sullivan did not say how much, if any, drugs were recovered from the building Thursday, but one person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The building is zoned as a mixed commercial and residential property. It was sold by Bertie Johnson in 2009 and purchased by Touch Tone Cleaners, LLC later that same year. That corporation is registered to Thomas R. Rice, of Dayton, according to Ohio Secretary of State records. Rice briefly owned the building in his name in 2009.

There is currently more than $2,000 in taxes owed on the property, according to Montgomery County Auditor records.

No liquor permit could be located in Ohio Division of Liquor Control records for the address, Touch Tone Cleaners, Thomas Rice or Club Expressions. The club advertises itself as a private, members-only club.

A Facebook event listing from a 2011 party thrown at the club says that no ID was required to enter.
