Staff Report

CLARK COUNTY —

Residents and truckers helped in the arrest of a man and woman police said burglarized a home and then fled across two counties in a stolen car at speeds that reached 90 mph.

Andrea D. Rowland, 35, and Jonathan Huff, 38, are charged with burglary and receiving stolen property, both of which are felonies. Huff will also face a felony charge of fleeing and eluding, two counts of driving under suspension and several misdemeanor traffic violations, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

A neighbor allegedly witnessed the suspects breaking into an unoccupied home in the 8200 block of Wescott Avenue, in Mad River Twp., at about 2 p.m. The neighbor gave dispatchers a description of two burglars — later identified as Rowland and Huff — and said they drove off in a silver car, Sheriff Gene Kelly said.

A deputy from Mad River Twp. spotted the two, and that triggered the pursuit. Kelly said the couple fled at high speed toward the Clark County line. The car, a Monte Carlo reported by Huber Heights police as stolen, broke down near Ohio 235 in Fairborn. Rowland and Huff got out and ran. Officers from Fairborn, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and the Greene County Sheriff’s Office were called to assist with the search.

Police dogs tracked Rowland and Huff to a location near gravel pits by Ohio 235 and Osborn Road, just north of the base. Truckers working in the area directed deputies to where Rowland and Huff were trying to swim across a pond, Kelly said.

Jim McAdow, a driver for Evans Trucking, saw them in the pond.

“He turned around and came back to where she was because she wasn’t going to go,” McAdow said of Huff. “About that time one of our guys called. The law was back here and nailed ‘em.”

Rowland had been sought on a warrant out of Huber Heights for vehicle theft and another out of Montgomery County for a probation violation. Huff had been sought on a warrant out of Florida, Kelly said.

Both were taken to the Clark County Jail. They will be arraigned Thursday morning in Clark County Municipal Court.
