Puppies locked in car in triple digit temps

DAYTON, Ohio —

A woman was on her lunch break onĀ  when she heard dogs yelping and whining from a parked car nearby during one of the hottest parts of Friday.

The woman peered into the black Chrysler 300 on Pretzinger Lane at about 1 p.m. and noticed two puppies locked inside the hot vehicle with the back windows cracked. A veterinarian from Woodman Drive Animal Hospital estimated the temperature in the car at about 120 degrees.

A Dayton police officer reached into the cracked window and unlocked the car door to retrieve the panting puppies, according to a police incident report.

Once out of the vehicle, the puppies were given water and taken to a shady area nearby.

The owners of the vehicle came back around 1:45 p.m., and a female who owned the dogs told police that she would never hurt the puppies.

Despite her plea, the 32-year-old woman and the other owner, a 33-year-old man, were charged with two counts of animal cruelty for leaving the 3-month-old mixed breed puppies inside the vehicle.

The Animal Resource Center was called to the scene and will hold the puppies for ten days while the charges are made.
