Q&A about Hurricane Sandy with Rich Wirdzek

Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek was on hand for a live chat about Hurricane Sandy. Here is just a sampling of the questions he received:

How will this storm compare to Katrina?
The loss of life is not expected that Katrina created. It's the cost of damage to the infrastructure, travel, and even regional economy that will long lasting and devestating

Will this storm be worse for us than Ike in 2008?
The winds won't be as strong and a lot of the leaves are brittle or off the trees, so the pull on them is not as great. The gusts will not be as high, i.e. 70+ that we had with Ike.

Will we get snow?
Some snow is possible tonight, but it will be too warm for road issues. Might add up on the grass a bit in spots.

How bad will the wind be?
50-55 mph. Strong enough to bring down weak limbs, weak and dead trees. Any structure like a weakened awning. It can blow around lawn furniture. Usually 60 mph is where the real damage gets going. Hopefully we stay just below that.

Heading East, where will travel start to get bad?
Travel will get worse east and northeast, like Columbus into eastern Ohio, and also the Mansfield and Cleveland areas.
