Fire investigators in Troy said the cause of the fire early Monday morning in downtown Troy is listed  as " undetermined, not suspicious."  Troy Fire Department Assistant Chief Matt Simmons said the fire started on the first floor in The Troy Sports Center in the area of the checkout counter. It was possibly electrical in nature, but what actually caused the fire in unknown.

Offices and other busiensses on the second and third floors of the buillding in the SW quadrant of the public square have had to relocate for several weeks for clean-up due to smoke and heat damages in the upper floors. They include the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce and the office of Troy Main Street.

A neighbor spotted smoke coming from the Market Square Building around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Troy Fire Chief Chris Boehringer said there was smoke showing when firefighter arrived at the scene, and they sounded the second alarm for additional firefighters, bringing all off-duty Troy firefighters to the scene, but there was no mutual aid with other departments.

Boehringer said the fire was contained to the first floor retail area of the Troy Sports Center. He said damage to the structure is estimated at $150,000 while damage to contents and inventory is estimated at $200,000.
