Staff Report

BROOKVILLE, Ohio —

The Ohio Highway Patrol has reopened one westbound lane of Interstate 70, in the area of the Arlington Road exit in Brookville, now that a burning semitrailer has been extinguished.

All of I-70 in both directions was shut down initially because of a large amount of smoke that was produced by the burning semitrailer, which was in the westbound lanes. Crews were dispatched at about 9 p.m.

The fire was out at about 10 p.m. but much of the area will remain closed until at least 10:30 p.m., according to emergency radio traffic.

The truck driver, Bill Bruce of Dallas, Texas, said he pulled the semi over to the shoulder after blowing two tires.

"Blew out a trailer tire, started heading for the shoulder. Before I could get to the shoulder, second trailer tire went," he told News Center 7 videographer Jim Noelker.

Bruce said he got out to inspect the trailer and saw a small fire. He went to the cab to get a fire extinguisher.

"By the time I got back (to the fire), the only thing the fire extinguisher did was make it worse," he said.

Eyewitness Rachel Wilkinson, 25, who called News Center 7 as she was driving home on eastbound I-70, said the semi was headed west, but "the cab of it was facing eastbound."

Bruce said he wasn't hurt, but about half of the 35,000 pounds of Kraft Oscar Mayer Lunchables he was hauling burned.

News Center 7 is continuing to report this story and will bring you more details as they become available.
